Tennis Drills
Approach and Volley Drill
Approach and volley along the diagonal of the court, alternating between
deuce and ad courts. Feed in deuce court to player who hits an approach
shot at the service line, then closes to play a volley. Then the player
moves quickly over to the ad court and repeats. The first part of the
drill has forehand approach and forehand volleys from the deuce court
and backhand approach and volley from the ad court. In the second part,
it is forehand approach and backhand volley in the deuce court and vice
versa in the ad court. That moves the player over as with poaching and
then player moves back straight since he already switched courts.
X and V footwork Drill
Academia Sanchez-Casal has 6 basic footwork pattern drills for
integrating baseline, transition and net play. Here are the first two:
a) the X drill which works the player behind and inside the baseline, b)
a V drill which works a player with 2 deep balls behind the baseline
and then a third but short ball on the same side as the second ball
which works as an approach shot. The fourth shot works the player back
on the same side, the fifth shot works the student laterally behind the
baseline and the sixth shot is short on the same side of the fifth.
Short balls should be fed on the same side as the preceeding deep ball
since you want to encourage forward (only) movement.
Volley Drill
1) Alternating Volley Drill, 2) Alternating Swing Volley Drill, 3)
Volley (2-3 volleys) and Overhead Drill. The swing volley drill is great
for practicing the offensive shoulder-height ball where the player
needs to generate racquet head speed.
